READY TO ROCK!

http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movies/cinema-articles-photos/billa-2-photos-pictures-stills-30.jpgWe all know how exciting 2012 is going to be. We mean, there are two hits already and a lineup of promising movies in the days to come. Promising, yes. And here they are for your ready reference.

Supposedly a prequel to the smash hit Billa, Billa 2 is releasing on May 1, 2012 on Ajith's birthday if things progress as per plan.

Close on the heels of Billa 2 is Maatraan, K V Anand's action thriller with Suriya and Kajal Aggarwal. Initial release reports suggest Maatraan will be released on May 1st too.

If big brother is up for release, can the small one be behind? Karthi's political drama Saguni is releasing on the Tamil New Year's day in April.

Rajesh's rom-com with Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead is finally releasing this year. There is Hansika Motwani to keep Udhayanidhi company and Santhanam to tickle the funny bones.

Podaa Podi, Silambarasan's rom-com that will serve as the launch for Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is releasing on Valentine's Day if things go as planned.

KSY: IDEA TO OPPORTUNITY TO OVERWHELMING SUCCESS!

t all begins with an idea; doesn’t it? Ask Balaji Mohan, director of Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi. Not many would have imagined that the simple sounding idea would one day become a feature film. And, that ‘one day’ did not take years in arriving. It was a fairly quick transmission from the small time environments of Youtube and the slightly larger platform of Naalaya Iyakkunar to the biggest stage of them all, cinema. Commercial cinema can be a tough breeding ground. We have seen incredibly talented people having to wait years for their turn, great stories having to run from pillar to post to get a producer. A good example is Mounaguru; Shanthakumar had to walk around for 3 years before he found a taker for his script. Yes, talent is nothing without opportunity. And, therefore, it is not the talent that we will be talking about this time; but the men who spot the talent and give them the right opportunity.

Identifying and tapping potential is a skill or an instinct that is sometimes underrated. That is why, in the midst of all the Kudos to Balaji Mohan, we must also not forget to give a round of applause to Siddharth and Nirav Shah; not for the acting and camera work; but for identifying the potential of Balaji Mohan and Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi. Appreciating a short film is one thing, but it takes far greater confidence and courage to invest in the same story for a feature film. Apparently, both Siddharth and Nirav Shah spotted the tree that lay within the seed. The unconventional nature of the venture, the out of the ordinary courage they showed in putting their money on a greenhorn and a new kind of story has to be commended. Also, the co-producer of KSY, Y Not films too deserves a mention here because they have consistently shown an eye for films that question conventions; their previous production venture was Va-Quarter Cutting; do we need to say more.

Why should we give a special round of applause to the producers? Don’t producers identify good stories and fund them all the time? Yes, but things happened differently for KSY. Siddharth was never a producer until he came across KSY; he decided to produce just because he loved the story so much and Nirav Shah shared his vision. Now, that is what we call special. Also there is a certain notion that themes that work on one format do not generally transform well into another. Like telefilm themes can never be good movies; good TV themes can never make good movies; and also that good short films cannot sustain that same interest over a 3 hour period. Such notions have been cemented strongly because of the failure of a few attempts; like how the very successful TV series Kana Kaanum Kaalangal couldn’t deliver when developed into a movie format as Pattalam.

A lot of the time; it is that belief by someone who counts that makes the difference between a success story and a never been story. Siddharth and Nirav Shah showed that belief and so what would have ended up as a short film is now on its way to being a trend setting feature film; and it’s going to Bollywood too. Similar instances in the recent past, of producers identifying potential in unlikely places includes Dhayanidhi Azhagiri, who supported Thamizh Padam which would have sounded like a crazy idea to many seasoned minds. Then there was Arya who put his money on Boss, trusting the potential of the script.

To truly understand the importance of potential being identified by a person with the ability to propel it ahead; we must take a look at Paranormal Activity. Today, it is a global phenomenon; almost everyone has seen or at least heard about it. But, its beginnings were as a humble independent production by a man who was afraid of ghosts; shot entirely within the confines of his house. It was something perhaps destined to be a Youtube trend for a day, and nothing more. But, it was spotted by Paramount Pictures that put it on a global platform. Now, look where it is.

The world is moved ahead by ideas. Yes, but its not ideas alone, it is the identification of the potential behind those ideas by people who matter that is the second and perhaps the step that decides the ultimate fate of the idea. KSY is a very good example of an idea that was identified and given the space to flourish. Let there be more such instances. And, this is also a vindication for a stage like Naalaya Iyakkunar. There were thoughts that a short film competition is never the right way to identify directors for feature films. Now, that has been proved wrong. Let there be more like KSY.

Sehwag drops to 18 in ICC batsmen rankings

Dubai: The continuous failure with the bat cost Indian opener Virender Sehwag four places as he slid to 18th in the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen but skipper Mahendra Singh moved up by two places to number four.

Sehwag has failed to fire in the ongoing tri-series in Australia while Dhoni has been a success.

Young batsman Virat Kohli continues to be India`s best ranked batsman at number three, behind South African duo of Hashim Amla (1) and AB de Villiers (2).

With his two 90 plus scores, left-handed opener Gautam Gambhir has gained six places to find himself at number 15.

In the bowlers` list, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is the only Indian in top-20 as he jumped to number 11, a gain of three slots.

Left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan is the next best for India, way behind at number 30 after dropping two positions.

Meanwhile, England captain Alastair Cook and fast bowler Steven Finn have broken into the top 10 after stellar performances against Pakistan in the four-match ODI series, which they won 4-0.

Cook has jumped 27 places to eighth position after finishing as the leading run-getter in the series with 323 runs, including back-to-back centuries in the Abu Dhabi ODIs.

Cook, who won the Test Player of the Year award at the LG ICC Awards in London in 2011, has now become the second highest-ranked England batsman after Jonathan Trott who has dropped two places to sixth position after managing just 38 runs in the series.

Flamboyant Kevin Pietersen is the other batsman who has made a charge on the batting ladder. The Surrey batsman scored 281 runs in the series at an average of nearly 94 following scores of 14, 26, 111 not out and 130.

For these entertaining performances, Pietersen has been rewarded with a jump of 22 places which puts him in 26th position.

Finn has achieved a career-best ranking by rocketing 67 places to ninth position. The 22-year-old Middlesex bowler claimed 13 wickets in the series and he is now the second England bowler inside the top 10 after off-spinner Graeme Swann, who has finished in third position after gaining one place.

Stuart Broad is the other England bowler to have improved his ranking. He is now in 24th position after rising five places.

Pakistan`s Umar Akmal has dropped out of the top 10, falling to 13th position, down by three places, captain Misbah-ul-Haq has slipped three places to 29th spot.

Shahid Afridi has dropped one place to 38th position, Younus Khan has slipped seven places to 43rd spot and Mohammad Hafeez has fallen five places to 48th position.

The only Pakistan batsman to make an upward movement is Asad Shafiq who has gained nine places and now sits in 70th spot.

Pakistan bowlers to drop in the bowlers chart include Mohammad Hafeez, who has slipped from second spot to sixth position, Shahid Afridi, who has dropped from 11th to 15th spot, and Umar Gul, who has ended in 35th position after falling 11 places.

Saeed Ajmal, who finished with 10 wickets in the series, leads the bowlers` table, followed by South Africa’s Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
